Role of Tech Designer is to bridge the gap between business requirements and technical implementation, focusing on designing robust, scalable, and maintainable solutions within legacy systems.

A Tech Designer in a mainframe environment is responsible for translating functional and non-functional requirements into detailed technical designs. They work closely with business analysts, developers, and testers to ensure that the solution aligns with enterprise architecture standards and meets business needs.

Responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining mainframe application. Their duties span the entire software development lifecycle, from initial concept to deployment and ongoing support. They collaborate with stakeholders, analyze requirements, write code, and ensure software quality. 

Able to take on a broader, more strategic role that encompasses system architecture, design and project oversight. Responsible for ensuring that the software system as a whole is scalable, maintainable, and aligned with business objectives. Managing and following up the developers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Technical Design & Architecture:
  • Create detailed design documents for enhancements or new features in mainframe applications (COBOL, EGL, JCL, DB2).
  • Ensure designs are aligned with enterprise architecture and security standards.
  • Evaluate existing systems and propose modernization or optimization strategies.

• Collaboration & Communication:
  • Work with business analysts to understand requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Collaborate with developers to ensure design feasibility and clarity.
  • Support QA teams during testing phases by clarifying design intent and resolving issues.

• Documentation & Standards:
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of designs, data flows, and system interactions.
  • Promote coding and design standards across the team to ensure consistency and maintainability.

• Problem Solving & Innovation:
  • Analyze complex problems and propose efficient solutions.
  • Stay updated on mainframe modernization trends (e.g., integration with cloud, APIs, DevOps practices).

Skills & Qualifications:

• Strong experience with mainframe technologies (COBOL, EGL, JCL, DB2, CICS) and SQL.
• Understanding of batch and online processing.
• Familiarity with software development lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies.
• Ability to design for performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Excellent analytical and communication skills.
