A career change does not have to be a leap into the unknown

A new career direction can begin with a part-time role, a conversation with your manager, or the courage to try something different. Martin’s experience shows how gaining practical experience and exploring opportunities within one company can gradually lead you towards work that feels right.

Finding a way to make work and study fit together

A new career direction can begin with a part-time role, a conversation with your manager, or the courage to try something different. Martin’s experience shows how gaining practical experience and exploring opportunities within one company can gradually lead you towards work that feels right.

When Martin joined KBC, he was still at university. His original motivation was simple. He wanted to gain practical experience, develop good working habits, and enter the job market with a head start. “I wanted to have some experience by the time I graduated,” he explains.

Rather than waiting until the end of his studies, he decided to combine university with a part-time role at KBC. He initially worked two and a half days a week and dedicated the rest of his time to his studies.

Teamleader is always here to help

Beginning a career while studying can feel demanding, particularly during exams or while completing a final thesis. For Martin, open communication with his team leader made the combination manageable. He could adjust his working schedule around his university responsibilities and discuss demanding periods in advance. When he needed time for an exam, he and his team leader looked for a suitable solution together. He also learned that students could use five days of paid study leave. “My team leader told me about the study leave because I probably would not have known about it otherwise,” says Martin.

His experience highlights something that can be valuable at any stage of a career. You do not have to solve every challenge alone. A conversation about what you need, what is possible, and how you can organize your responsibilities may open options you had not previously considered.

Discovering a new direction without starting from zero

Starting full-time was not the end of Martin’s development. As he learned more about the company and his own interests, he decided to make an internal move from investigation to analysis. The change brought greater responsibility, but also more freedom. Most importantly, it allowed him to move closer to a subject he genuinely wanted to understand: the financial market. “What I enjoy most is learning about the financial market. That was one of the reasons why I moved to this team,” he explains.

Changing careers can sometimes be imagined as leaving everything familiar behind. Martin’s journey offers another perspective. A career change can also happen within an environment you already know. For him, an internal rotation made the transition easier. He was entering a different area of work, but he already understood the company and knew people across the organization. That familiarity gave him a foundation from which he could explore a new professional direction.

The people around you matter too

The content of a role is important, but it is rarely the only reason people enjoy their work. For Martin, the atmosphere in his team was another positive discovery. He describes an environment where colleagues can enjoy activities together outside work while still taking responsibility for delivering high-quality results. In his view, that combination creates ideal working conditions. “The friendly atmosphere in the team was a very pleasant surprise,” he says.

A supportive environment does not remove every challenge that comes with changing roles. It can, however, make it easier to ask questions, learn new skills, and gradually build confidence in an unfamiliar area.

Your next step does not need to define your entire future

Martin did not begin with every stage of his career mapped out. He started with a practical goal, to gain experience while studying. That decision led to a full-time position, and later to an internal move into an area that matched his growing interest in financial markets. His experience is a useful reminder for anyone considering a career change. You do not necessarily need to know exactly where you want to be several years from now. Sometimes, the most important thing is to identify the next step that can help you learn more about yourself and the opportunities available to you. That step could be applying for a new position, exploring a different specialization, or simply starting a conversation about where your skills might take you next.
